European Painting and the Arts of Africa, 1900–1918

This class aims to reinvigorate the well-documented story of European artists’ fascination with and appropriation of African art in the early decades of the 20th century. Focusing on the works of Vlaminck, Derain, Matisse, Picasso, Kirchner, and Modigliani.
